While it is sad to see schools closing in Simcoe County, Rotary Clubs, local businesses, community organizations and the Simcoe Muskoka District School Board partner to turn the surplus equipment, furniture and books into a tremendous benefit to schools in other countries. Our most recent container pack finally arrived at its destination, Mwanza, Tanzania Africa. Thanks to coordination by Elephant Thoughts and the Rotary Club of Igoma-Mwanza it finally made it. Below are excerpts from an email sent to Elephant Thoughts from Mwanza:
Yesterday we have a wonderful event which was led by the Regional Commissioner, Mr. John Mongela and all departmental leaders of Mwanza regional and Mwanza city. All the six schools (Igoma, Mandela, Nyerere, Shamaliwa, Bukaga and Kanindo) were represented by some students, school's board and teachers and the community members. Others who attended were the ward leaders.
This event was also covered by the media which will be having a special coverage on Tuesday for half an hour at Star TV to the heading known as, "JARIDA MARIDHAWA," Meaning, "newsletter multiverse." Star TV is a National coverage TV. There were more than four media coverage which attended this event. Even today, I have got a call from them for more interviews.
I cried with a joy of tears when I see the container was on truck to Mwanza, and yesterday it was a special moment to me, that at last the items which you donated were in the final destination to the intended schools. I kindly express my sincerely thanks to Jeremy and his team for trusting me for the last opportunity.

September 20th - Rotarian Cameron White (Bracebridge Club) visited our club to speak about Junior Achievement. Junior Achievement is an international, not for profit, association that became national in 1967. The program started in Muskoka with five classes and has now grown to 40 classes. It is in every school in the Trillium Lakeland School Board and the North Simcoe Muskoka School Board with increasing involvement in the Near North District School Board. The core pillars of Junior Achievement are: Financial Literacy, Entrepreneurship and Work Readiness. The Financial Literacy program provides important life skills that fit nicely with promoting youth volunteering.
September 27th - There was no speaker today, it was a great lunch catching up on all our activities.

In order to accommodate more attendees, we have negotiated additional rooms at Clevelands House. Clevelands House is closed at this time of the year but they have agreed to reopen a block of guest rooms to accommodate our conference.
Clevelands Housed is located just minutes from the Marriott at 1040 Juddhaven Road. To get to the Marriott, one must drive by Clevelands House. There is a walking path between the two resorts and the walk is less than 10 minutes. In addition; the conference will have a shuttle bus running between the two resorts.
The Rotary Leadership Institute sessions in North Bay to be held at the Best Western are re-scheduled to - Nov 12 & 13. Early Registration is $75 for each course (price increases to $100 after Nov 4).
Take Part 1 on Sat and follow through with Part 2 on Sunday, or Part 2 on Sat and Part 3 on Sunday.
The Part 1 session is an excellent way to introduce new members to Rotary and allow them to gain leadership skills.
A storm date has been set (Nov 19 & Nov 20) registered participants will be advised if the storm date is applicable as early as possible on Friday, November 11th.
The cost includes all course materials, breaks and lunch. Many clubs cover the registration costs for participants. Your hotel accommodation is not included in the course cost. The Best Western is offering a Special Rate . (Tell them you are with Rotary)

Accommodation is at a premium. Rooms are going quickly and difficult to come by! The District has secured two blocks of rooms.
Hilton Garden Inn Atlanta Downtown: Rooms are 235USD plus taxes per night which includes a hot breakfast. The hotel is .3 km from the Congress Centre and newly renovated.
Hyatt Atlanta Midtown: Rooms are 195USD plus taxes per night. This does not include breakfast. Breakfast can be purchased at the hotel for 14USD. The hotel is 2 km from the Congress Centre and a block from the metro. It is in the heart of many restaurants and attractions.

Our new Board of Directors is at the helm and testing out a new structure which consists of a smaller Board that works with a Leadership Team. The Board has also assumed oversight for fundraising and public relations, and will continue to receive support from many individual members and sub-committees who oversee various tasks and responsibilities that keep the club running.
